Getting your VIN inspected in Georgia
Check this first: Georgia may not need you to do this.
Georgia doesn't title vehicles from model year 1985 and earlier. If yours is 1985 or older, Georgia registers it without a title, and there is nothing for us to get you that the state would ask for.
A Montana title still makes sense if a buyer in another state, an agreed-value insurer, or a lender wants one. If that is you, carry on.
Georgia has no private route. A police officer or a state office has to do it, and you'll want to call first.
Who Georgia allows
- Law enforcement officer
- County tag agent
Who to call
Call the non-emergency line, not 911 and not the front counter. Ask for a VIN verification for an out-of-state title application, in those words. "Inspection" sounds like a safety check they aren't set up to do. If they ask what form, say T-22B is the Georgia equivalent. The one they'll actually complete is Montana's MV20.
Some departments do this free while you wait. If the city department says no, the sheriff's office and the auto theft unit do these routinely.
What happens at the inspection
Whoever does it fills in Section 2 of Montana form MV20 by hand, in ink, standing at the vehicle, and signs it. You collect one document showing their name and department or license, take four photos, and mail the original back to us with the return label from your packet and one Forever stamp.
Read the step-by-step, including what not to let them write on.
Checked against Georgia's own form or titling page on 2026-08-26. If the rules have moved since, tell us and we'll correct it the same week.
$20 opens your case and buys the prepared form. The $279 balance is charged only once your Montana title has been issued and is in our hands.
