Pink Slip Title is a service of EMX, LLC, a Montana limited liability company. We prepare and file vehicle title applications. We are not a law firm and we do not give legal advice.
1. What you are buying
For $299 in total we prepare and file a Montana certificate of title application for one vehicle, and we pay Montana’s state fees out of that. Eligible vehicles are road vehicles 30 years and older, self-propelled motorhomes 30 years and older, and off-road machines 10 years and older.
Not included: the VIN inspection. Montana requires that somebody independent physically looks at your vehicle and records the number on Montana Form MV20. You arrange and pay for that directly. Who is permitted to do it is decided by the law of your state, not Montana’s. In some states that is a notary or a licensed dealer for around $25, and in others only law enforcement, who are usually free but are not obliged to help you. See who can do it where you live.
2. How the two payments work
This is the part worth reading twice.
- $20 today. This pays for your Montana MV20 prepared with your vehicle’s details already entered, and a cover letter addressed to whoever performs your inspection. Those documents are yours to keep whatever happens next. The $20 is not refundable, except as described in section 6.
- $279 later, once. We charge the same card you used for the $20, after your Montana certificate of title has been issued and has physically arrived at our office. Typically four to eight weeks after we file, and never before. We email you when we file, and again on the day the title arrives, before we charge.
By entering your card you authorize that second charge. It is a single charge of a fixed amount. It is not a subscription, there is nothing recurring, and we store no card details ourselves. Your card is held by Stripe, our payment processor.
If Montana never issues a title, the $279 is never charged. If the charge fails, we email you a link to pay another way and hold your title until it is settled. No deadline, no late fee. We do not mail a title before it has been paid for. Charges appear on your statement as PINK SLIP TITLE.
You may cancel at any time before we file with Montana, and you will owe nothing beyond the $20. Once we have filed, the $279 becomes due when the title is issued. If we have not filed within twelve months we will ask you to authorize the card again before we do.
3. How ownership moves
Montana will not issue a title of this kind to an out-of-state individual. To file at all, EMX, LLC must be the owner of record. So:
- You sell the vehicle to EMX, LLC on a bill of sale, at its actual value.
- EMX, LLC applies for and receives the Montana title.
- EMX, LLC transfers the vehicle back to you on a second bill of sale at the same value, and mails you both documents.
EMX, LLC holds title only to complete the filing and takes no profit on the vehicle itself. Our fee is for the service. We will not sell, encumber, move or borrow against your vehicle, and we hold no claim to it beyond the unpaid balance described in section 2.
A tax consequence you should know about: when you title the vehicle in your own state, that transfer may be taxable there. Some states assess use tax on fair market value regardless of the price written on a bill of sale. Check with your state before you order. We cannot advise you on your state’s taxes.
4. What you promise us
By ordering you confirm that:
- You lawfully possess the vehicle and have the right to sell it.
- There is no unpaid loan or lien against it that has not been released.
- You have taken reasonable steps to find the original title: asked the seller, searched the paperwork that came with the vehicle, and where you could, asked the titling authority in the state where it was last titled about a duplicate. You will describe those steps to us honestly and we will repeat them to Montana.
- Everything you tell us is true, including the vehicle’s value.
- The vehicle is not stolen and you know of no other person claiming it.
These matter because we sign the Montana application under penalty of law (MCA 45-7-203), relying on what you tell us. If any of it turns out to be false, you are responsible for the consequences, including any costs we incur.
5. If your own state can do it cheaper, we will tell you
Several states do not require a title for a vehicle this old, and some issue one far more cheaply than we can. Tennessee residents with a 30+ year vehicle can do it themselves with a single form. If we spot that, we will tell you and refund you in full, including the $20.
6. Refunds
- The $20 setup fee is not refundable once we have prepared your documents, because that is the work it pays for. But see the next two lines.
- If we got your state’s inspection rules wrong, or told you something that turned out not to hold, ask and we will refund the $20. That has to be true or the arrangement is worthless.
- If you did not need us at all (section 5), full refund.
- Before we file with Montana: you owe nothing beyond the $20, and the $279 is never charged.
- If Montana rejects the application and we cannot fix it: the $279 is never charged, and we refund the $20.
- Once your title has been issued and mailed to you: the $279 is not refundable. The work is done and the document exists.
- If you never send your paperwork back: we will chase you twice. After 90 days we close the case. Nothing further is charged.
7. What we do not control
Montana’s processing time is Montana’s. It is usually about a month; it is not a promise. We also do not control the mail, your inspector, whether a police department chooses to help you, or whether your own state accepts the title, though an out-of-state title is ordinary business at any DMV.
8. Your documents and your data
We keep your photos and paperwork in encrypted storage and use them only to prepare your filing. We do not sell your information. We keep case records for seven years, because title records occasionally need revisiting, and then delete them. More detail in our privacy policy.
9. Disputes and governing law
These terms are governed by the law of the State of Montana. Before anything formal, email us: nearly everything is a misunderstanding that a reply fixes, and we would rather fix it than argue about it.
